After his funeral, I had to prepare my own breakfast for the first time in years.
That was when I discovered something strange in the kitchen.
On the highest shelf of the cupboard, I found dozens of small glass jars. Every single one was numbered. Inside them was a yellowish powder.
On one of the jars, written in my husband’s handwriting, were the words:
“For Mary only. Every morning.”
A chill ran down my spine.
I remembered that during the last few years, my husband had always added something to my breakfast.
Whenever I asked what it was, he would smile and say:
“My secret ingredient.”
That morning, I decided to prepare exactly the same breakfast he had made for me for so many years.
I added a little of the powder to the food.
But I didn’t eat any of it myself.
Our dog, Bobby, was sitting at my feet, wagging his tail and begging for food.
