It had been a tragic accident, not deliberate poisoning.
Two weeks later, our children came to visit me.
I told them everything.
My son remained silent for a long time.
Then he said:
“Mom, do you know what Dad used to tell us?”
“What?”
“He always said, ‘I may not have much to leave your mother, but I can make sure she feels loved every single morning.’”
That evening, for the first time since my husband’s death, I entered the kitchen without crying.
I opened his recipe notebook.
On the first page, he had written:
“Mary’s Favorite Breakfast.”
And underneath, in tiny handwriting:
“The most important ingredient is love. Everything else can be changed.”
I smiled.
The following morning, I prepared my own breakfast without any of the old powders or supplements.
I placed two cups of tea on the table.
One for myself.
And the other in his memory.
