My 79-Year-Old Mother, Who Suffers From Parkinson’s Disease, Accidentally Overheard My Husband and Me Talking About a Nursing Home. The Next Morning, She Disappeared, Leaving a Goodbye Letter on the Table: “I Don’t Want to Be a Burden to You Anymore. By the Time You Read This, It Will Already Be Too Late.” But When the Police Finally Found Her, My Husband Fell to His Knees and Burst Into Tears…

Robert gently covered her eyes and wheeled her toward the newly renovated room on the ground floor.

When my mother opened her eyes, she covered her mouth with both hands.

The room was bright and welcoming.

Her favorite blue armchair stood beside the window. Family photographs covered the walls.

A specially adapted bedside table stood next to her bed, and her favorite flowers decorated the windowsill.

But the most touching surprise was a piece of paper taped to the door.

Sophie had written in large, colorful letters:

“GRANDMA, IF YOUR HANDS SHAKE, I’LL HOLD THEM. IF YOU WALK SLOWLY, I’LL WALK SLOWLY TOO. JUST PLEASE ALWAYS STAY WITH US, BECAUSE YOU ARE THE HEART OF OUR HOME.”

My mother stared at those words for a long time.

Then she turned toward us.

“All that night, I kept thinking nobody needed me anymore…”

Sophie ran over and wrapped her little arms around her grandmother.
