“To My Beloved Daughter.”
I opened it. My legs nearly gave way as I read the first lines.
“My darling Emily,
Forgive me for causing you so much trouble for so long. I know my illness has turned your lives into a nightmare. I heard everything last night.
Please don’t blame your husband. He’s right. I’m no longer the mother who could help you.
I don’t want to spend my final days surrounded by strangers, waking up every morning wondering whether you’ll come to visit me.
By the time you read this letter, it may already be too late.
Just remember that I have loved you more than anything in this world.”
The letter slipped from my fingers.
“ROBERT! COME HERE! HURRY!”
My husband rushed into the bedroom. The moment he saw my mother, he froze.
“Oh my God… What happened?”
I pointed toward the medication boxes.
