“You called the police because you wanted extra dessert?”
There it was.
Not a plan.
Not some sweet little rescue mission he’d carefully designed.
Just Tyler logic.
Ice cream existed.
Mom liked ice cream.
Mom kept not eating ice cream.
Therefore everybody involved was behaving incorrectly.

Officer Bruce asked, “Why didn’t you just ask her to eat some?”
Tyler looked at him like that was the dumbest question he’d heard all night.
“I do.” Then he looked at me. “She says no.”
“Tyler… honey…” I whispered.
His arms folded again.
“Moms have to eat too.”
“She says no.”
For one awful second, I nearly laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because he sounded so furious about it.
Officer Bruce looked down, rubbing his thumb across the edge of his radio.
“My mom used to tell me she didn’t like the good pieces either,” he said.
