But everything changed when Robert picked up the microphone.
At first, he thanked everyone for coming.
Then his expression suddenly turned serious.
“Today, I want to announce an important decision.”
I smiled, thinking he had prepared a surprise.
But his next words wiped the smile from my face.
“My mother will no longer live in a nursing home. Starting tomorrow, she’s moving back into our house.”
I was stunned. We had never discussed this. Robert continued:
“And because my mother deserves to live comfortably, I’ve decided to give her our bedroom. Margaret must clear out the room tonight.”
The entire hall fell silent. I slowly stood up.
“Robert, where am I supposed to sleep?”
He didn’t even look at me.
“Anywhere you want. On the couch, in the living room. The important thing is that my mother is comfortable.”
Some of the guests began whispering nervously. I felt tears filling my eyes.
