The eleven minutes in that corridor, which I have had to reconstruct because I remember almost none of it.
I know I was still holding the bag, because Dev had to take it off me in the side room and put it on a chair.
And I know that at some point in those eleven minutes I said something extremely stupid, because the nurse on the desk — whose name is Winnie and who has been there since 2011 — mentioned it to me afterwards, kindly, in the February, when I went back in to thank them.
Apparently I said: "Is he poorly?"
And when nobody answered that, I said: "Is it his heart?"
I had a year of missed dinners and a man crying on the edge of a bed and a husband who had stopped letting me touch him, and the two guesses I produced in a corridor were poorly and his heart.
