The woman on the desk — who I have known for years — looked up and her face went.
"Hiya. Is Laurie about? Don't tell him. He'll only say I shouldn't have."
And she looked at the nurse next to her. And neither of them said anything.
"Has something happened?"
Nothing.
"Where's my husband?"
And that is when I saw Dev coming down the corridor towards me. Slowly. And his face was the wrong colour.
And I felt ridiculous, so I held up the bag.
"Thank God. Can you tell me where he is?"
And he stopped in front of me and looked at that bag, and then at my face, and his eyes went.
"Dev?"
He opened his mouth and shut it again.
"What's happened?"
And he looked up and down that corridor as though he was hoping somebody else would do it.
And then: "He hasn't told you anything, has he."
