“You are being served with notice of divorce proceedings.”
Adrian’s head snapped toward me.
“A protective order concerning this property.”
Marcus continued.
“And investigators have a warrant related to corporate fraud and attempted theft of protected assets.”
The officers stepped forward.
Adrian backed up.
“Wait.”
One officer took his wrist.
“Claire.”
Then the other.
“Claire, please.”
The handcuffs clicked.
ADRIAN BLAMED CELESTE IMMEDIATELY
“It was Celeste.”
I almost smiled.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was predictable.
“She pushed this.”
Adrian struggled against the officers.
“She said it would work.”
“She handled the documents.”
“Claire, we can fix this.”
I stood beside the open front door.
The same door my father had hung when we renovated the house.
Adrian looked at me desperately.
“We’re married.”
“Not for much longer.”
“Please.”
He started crying.
“I made a mistake.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
“You had a plan.”
That silenced him.
