I stared at it.
“Cross with you?”
Daniel smiled with sadness.
That was Michael’s version.
“What about yours?”
My version was more complicated.
He admitted that after leaving the hospital I kept the envelope locked in a drawer.
For years, he did nothing.
Michael had never asked him to look for me.
Daniel respected that.
Then, three months ago, something happened.
My sister had posted something about our journey.
A picture of the hotel.
A joking phrase saying he had finally convinced “the world’s stubborn widow” to make a solo trip.
Daniel recognized my name.

He remembered Michael.
And after six years wondering if the right time would ever come, he booked a room in the same hotel.
My stomach turned.
“Then the hat?
—Accident.
“The breakfast?”
I knew what time you used to go down.
The beach?
I was hoping you were there.
