Daniel looked down.
“You’re right.
I wanted to slap him.
Instead, I squeezed the envelope so tightly that it folded between my fingers.
Tell me everything.
Daniel looked at the water.
“Six years ago, I spent almost a month in the same hospital as Michael.
I was paralyzed.
Daniel explained that he was recovering from major surgery after a car accident. Michael's room was two doors further.
They met one night when neither of them could sleep.
Michael had slowly entered the hospital common room, dragging the serum support behind him, and found Daniel looking out the window.
They started talking.
At first, of unimportant things.
Sports.
From the terrible hospital food.
Movies.
But over the next few weeks, those conversations went deeper.
Michael knew he was dying.
I hadn't known how scared I was.
I had protected myself from that.
“I was talking about you constantly,” Daniel said.
