I surprised my grandfather with the trip to Hawaii he had dreamed of his entire life — on our last day there, the hotel manager said…

“According to family history, you cheated.”

“I absolutely did not.”

“That’s not how the story survived.”

Grandpa looked offended.

For about two seconds.

Then he laughed so hard he started coughing.

I handed him water.

We stayed in that room for nearly three hours.

Our flight was supposed to leave the next morning.

I canceled it.

Grandpa protested.

“We can’t afford that.”

“I can.”

“You saved for this trip.”

“I’ll save again.”

He looked at me.

“You sound like your grandmother.”

“Thank you.”

“That wasn’t necessarily a compliment.”

We stayed another week.

And during that week, something extraordinary happened.

The family came.

Not all at once.

That would have overwhelmed him.

First Leilani’s children.

Then grandchildren.

Then great-grandchildren.

They arrived carrying photographs.

Food.

Stories.

One little boy, maybe seven, stood in front of Grandpa for almost a full minute without speaking.

Finally he asked:

“Are you the soldier?”
