I Sewed My Prom Dress From My Late Father's Work Shirts—My Classmates Called It Janitor's Rags, Until the Principal Stopped the Music and the Whole Room Went Silent

I went to prom proud of it.

The Stonebridge High gym smelled like hairspray and warm punch.

Gold balloons bumped the ceiling.

When I walked in, every head turned.

My classmates stared and started whispering.

Then a girl in a silver gown stepped into my path.

Skylar Rosenthal.

Her father owned three car dealerships.

Her mother was the president of the school board.

Skylar held a plastic cup of water in one hand and a gold Cartier bracelet flashed on her wrist.

"Oh my God," she said, loud enough for the whole gym. "IS THAT DRESS MADE FROM OUR JANITOR'S RAGS?"

Laughter exploded around us.

A boy next to her, Colton Vickery, grinned and shouted, "IS THAT WHAT YOU WEAR WHEN YOU CAN'T AFFORD A REAL DRESS?"

My face burned.

Several classmates stepped away.

A phone came up to film me.

Skylar grabbed one of the pockets on my hip and tugged it so hard the stitches pulled.
