I caught my dad on my security camera planning to move my brother into my house while I was on a trip, and when my mom said, “Once everything is here, she will not make a scene. She will just accept it,” I set a trap for them.

I booked a trip to Portugal with Rachel. Two weeks in September. Lisbon, Porto, the Douro Valley. No work emails. No family obligations. Just two friends exploring a new country.

I started saying no to things that drained me and yes to things that filled me up.

I stopped measuring my worth by how useful I was to other people.

Pixel and I settled into a comfortable routine. Morning coffee on the patio. Evening reading on the couch. Weekend hikes in the foothills.

For the first time in thirty-four years, my life felt like mine.

Not borrowed.

Not conditional.

Not waiting for approval.

Just mine.

I am standing in my living room now as I think back on all of it. Afternoon light comes through the windows I picked myself, falling across the hardwood floors I paid for with money I earned. Pixel is asleep on the chair my mother once measured for Kyle’s gaming setup. The Ring camera in the corner blinks its quiet blue light.
