I caught my dad on my security camera planning to move my brother into my house while I was on a trip, and when my mom said, “Once everything is here, she will not make a scene. She will just accept it,” I set a trap for them.

Mrs. Patterson approached hesitantly.

“Myra, I had no idea,” she said. “Your mother always said you agreed to these things. That you were happy to help Kyle.”

“She never told you she didn’t ask,” I said.

Mrs. Patterson lowered her eyes.

“No. She didn’t.”

I looked back at my mother one more time.

Part of me wanted to go to her, to explain, to soften the blow, to help her understand.

That was the old Myra talking.

The new Myra put on her coat and walked out into the cold March night.

Thirty-two minutes later, my mother found me in the country club parking lot.

I was sitting in my rental car with the engine running and the heat on. I should have driven away already, but some thread of the obedient daughter I had been for thirty-four years kept me there.

A knock came at the passenger window.
