I carried a baby for my twin brother — and when he looked at her back he handed her to me and said, "I'm not taking her home."

"I know."

Now the legal position, which nobody ever believes.

The woman who gives birth is the legal mother. At birth. Automatically.

That is the law and it is not a technicality and it does not depend on whose egg it was.

For Danny and Lorna to become Marnie's parents, they would have had to apply for a parental order — with my consent, in writing, no earlier than six weeks after the birth.

They had a solicitor. The application was going to be filed in the September.

It was never filed.

So I did not have to fight anybody for that child.

I was already her mother when he handed her back to me at about ten to five on the twenty-ninth of May, and he did not know that, and neither did Lorna, and neither did I until a solicitor called Nkem Osei explained it to me on the second of June.
