I carried a baby for my twin brother — and when he looked at her back he handed her to me and said, "I'm not taking her home."

A thirty-five-year-old man is responsible for what he says in a hospital room. Being six once is not a defence.

But I did want to know where it came from, and now I do, and it came from a six-year-old's question that nobody answered properly in about 1996.

My mother has not been the same since that phone call.

She is sixty-three and she sees Marnie every week and she has said sorry to me four times for a swimming costume, which is the wrong thing to be sorry about and which I have told her four times.

And me.

I am Marnie's mother. It is on the certificate and it has been since the fourth of June, 2025.

She is not my niece and she was not "kept." She was not a consolation. She is my daughter and I did not intend to have a second child and I would not give her back for anything on this earth.
