I boarded my husband's private jet and his secretary was in my seat, feeding him peeled orange. His mother told me to be considerate. I stepped off. Then the crew asked whether I wanted the flight cancelled.

She said: she worked for Aurelio until three this morning, Anneke. The least you can do is be considerate.

I looked at the chair I had sat in on about forty flights beside that man.

Seat 2A. It is not a better seat than any other seat on that aircraft. They are all the same seat.

That is worth saying because people assume it was about comfort or about status, and it was about neither. It was about where I had always been.

She stayed exactly where she was. Comfortable. Not moving. Waiting for me to accept the arrangement, which is a different thing from being caught out.

Somebody who has been caught out stands up.

She did not stand up. She did not even uncross her legs or move the plate.

And in about four seconds, watching her not move, I understood that this had been decided before I got to the aircraft.
