Susan silently held her hand.
“But why are you going to Los Angeles?” I asked.
Linda took a deep breath.
“Because someone is waiting for me there. Someone I’ve never met.”
I was surprised.
She continued.
“After Emily died, I learned that a few months before the accident, she had registered as an organ donor. Because of her, a young woman was given another chance at life.”
Linda burst into tears.
“That woman is thirty-four now. Her name is Rachel. For years, I refused to meet her. I couldn’t accept that my daughter was gone while someone else was still alive because of her.”
I felt tears gathering in my own eyes.
“And now you’ve decided to meet her?”
Linda nodded.
“Two months ago, Rachel wrote me a letter. She told me she’d had a baby. A little girl. And she named her daughter Emily, in honor of my daughter.”
