Nina standing beside my hospital bed.
Her eyes frightened.
She was holding something small in her hand.
A piece of paper.
She whispered, "Don't let them give you another injection."
My heart stopped.
I looked up.
"Detective..."
He leaned forward.
"What?"
"I think Nina was trying to warn me."
***
That night, I dreamed about the hospital.
White walls.
Fluorescent lights.
A clock ticking above the nurses' station.
I was sitting on a bed.
Nina stood beside the door.
She looked terrified.
Then a man entered.
He wore a white coat.
He said something I couldn't hear.
Nina began crying.
I woke suddenly.
My heart was racing.
For a moment, I couldn't remember where I was.
Then I looked around my little apartment.
My plants sat along the windowsill.
My cat slept beneath the chair.
My gardening boots stood beside the door.
I was safe.
I was no longer nineteen.
No longer trapped in my parents' house.
