Dad tried to welcome Ethan warmly, but Ethan barely responded. He seemed more concerned about his mother’s embarrassment than the damage she’d caused.
I asked Ethan to speak with me privately.
He apologized and said he’d been afraid of losing me. For a moment, I wanted to believe we could move past it.
Then he added, “To be fair, Mom wouldn’t have worried if you’d been more available and open about where you were.”
I stared at him.
I’d told him I was visiting my parents. Missing one call shouldn’t have required an explanation, let alone surveillance.
He even asked me to reassure his mother that she’d meant well because she was upset.
That was when I realized he still didn’t understand.
“I’m ending the engagement,” I said.
He begged me not to make a decision that night, reminding me we’d already booked the wedding venue. I wanted our future, too—the apartment, the wedding, and the life we’d planned.
