He asked me what he would get if he signed.
Not what Mom would get. Not what I needed. What he would get.
I told him what he would get was the privilege of continuing to live in a house he did not own with a wife whose mother he had just put on an air mattress in a basement with an overturned bucket for a nightstand.
He signed it at 6:47.
Part 3 — Four Days on an Overturned Bucket
I need to tell you what those four days in the basement looked like from my mother’s perspective.
Not because she told me willingly. Because I sat beside her bed the following morning and asked her directly, and because a woman who has spent her life refusing to be a burden will only describe what happened to her if the person asking makes it clear that the description is not a complaint. It is evidence.
I told Mom I needed to know. Not to punish Gabriel. To understand the full picture.
She told me.
On the first day, the day I left for my trip, Gabriel told her he needed the guest room for a project. He told her it would only be for a night or two. He told her the basement was quieter and that she might actually sleep better down there.
Mom told me she agreed because Gabriel was her son-in-law and she was a guest in his home and because the word project sounded temporary.
He carried the air mattress downstairs. He inflated it. He gave her one blanket and one pillow. He moved her medications to an overturned bucket because there was no furniture in the basement and he did not bring the nightstand down.
He told her he would bring meals.
On the first evening, he brought a plate of pasta and a glass of water and set them on the top step. He did not come down. Mom climbed the stairs to retrieve the plate. The stairs were steep. She held the railing with one hand and the plate with the other and she descended slowly because her body, which was being systematically weakened by a treatment designed to save it, could not manage speed.
She ate on the air mattress. She set the plate on the floor beside the bucket.
Nobody came to collect it.
The second day was a treatment day. Mom was supposed to have a chemotherapy session at the oncology center. Gabriel did not take her. He told her he had forgotten the appointment and that she should call to reschedule.
