Fifty Dollars to Film Her

Mark’s face got darker and darker.

“You’re fine now, aren’t you?”

“I’m fine?”

I bent down and showed him my knees.

“This is fine? When I was on the ground, which part of me did you pick up?”

He didn’t answer.

“Her pride. That’s what you picked up.”

Somebody in the yard sucked in a breath.

I didn’t stop.

I turned to Warren.

“And you. You said you believed Tyler. Then the second the cops walk in, you shove the phone at them and say ‘I’m done.’ Were you helping me, or were you waiting to watch me hang?”

Warren backed up against the trellis, face going red.

“I just want everybody to calm down.”

“Calm down. You get to say that?”

He dropped his head and wouldn’t look at me.

Mark reached for my arm.

“That’s enough. Let’s go inside.”
