Fifty Dollars to Film Her

“I’m doing this?”

I pointed at the red paper on the lawn.

“Diane gave him the firecracker. Diane took the video. You two took my pills. And I’m the one doing this?”

Warren shifted half a step forward.

“I believe the kid.”

That’s what he said. But his feet didn’t move again. He just stood there behind the chair, watching, ready to bolt for the door.

Diane saw somebody softening. She stopped crying on the spot. Straightened up. Switched to a harder voice.

“Don’t let that kid fool any of you. He stole my wallet yesterday. Now he’s scared I’ll tell his mother, so of course he’s gonna say whatever.”

“I didn’t steal anything!” Tyler yelled from behind her.

Diane didn’t look at him.

“Go on. Say that again ten times. See who the cops believe.”

My stomach dropped.

Tyler shrank a little further behind me. His hand closed on the hem of my shirt.
