Evelyn fell asleep feeling nervous, comforted, and strangely peaceful.
Then morning came.
Julian was gone.
At first, she assumed he had stepped out for coffee. Then she noticed the details that did not make sense. Her handbag was open. Her wallet was on the floor. Her phone had disappeared.
And beside the empty wineglass sat a small white envelope with her name written across the front.
Inside was a photograph.
It took Evelyn a moment to understand what she was seeing.
It was her.
Sleeping.
Unaware.
Someone had taken a picture of her while she was completely vulnerable.
Her stomach tightened as she turned the photograph over.
Six words were written on the back in black ink:
“Now you will do exactly this.”
Evelyn read the sentence again and again, trying to understand what Julian wanted from her.
The missing phone and stolen wallet suddenly felt like only part of the danger.
