Then the phone rang.
The voice on the other end introduced himself as a state patrol officer and explained that her husband had been in a motor vehicle accident. He was alive. He was conscious. But there was another person in the vehicle.
That single detail changed the meaning of everything.
During the drive to the hospital, she focused on getting there. She held onto the fact that he was breathing and that she needed answers from him directly. She refused to let her mind create a hundred explanations before she saw the truth herself.
Still, one question followed her the entire way.
Who was the other person?
At the hospital, every sound felt louder. Phones rang behind the desk. Shoes moved quickly across the floor. She stood there with one hand supporting her belly, trying to stay steady while waiting for someone to tell her what had happened.
A nurse finally approached and gave her the first piece of relief.
