“How has your intimate life been over the last eighteen years?”
Susan felt embarrassed answering. She lowered her eyes and explained the truth.
“There hasn’t been one,” she said. “We haven’t shared a room since 2008.”
She described it as something she had earned.
“The price I had to pay for my mistake.”
But Dr. Evans did not react the way Susan expected.
The doctor looked confused.
The medical images showed something that did not match Susan’s memory. There was evidence of a significant procedure and internal scarring that suggested surgery.
Susan immediately rejected the idea.
She had only given birth to Jake. She had never knowingly undergone surgery. There was no explanation that made sense.
Then Dr. Evans said the words that changed everything.
“Go home and ask your husband.”
Those words followed Susan all the way to the parking lot.
Ask Michael.
On the drive home, one memory from 2008 returned with painful clarity.
