Here are four categories of belongings that deserve special attention.
1. Prescription Medicines and Medical Supplies
This is one category that should almost never simply be kept as a personal souvenir.
When someone dies, their prescription medicines may remain in the home. It can be tempting to leave them in a cabinet because throwing away something that belonged to a loved one may feel emotionally difficult.
But medications are not ordinary possessions.
Prescription drugs may have been prescribed specifically for that person’s medical condition, age, dosage, and circumstances. Another person should not take them simply because they are still available.
Old or unused medications can also become dangerous if they are accidentally taken by children, visitors, or pets.
Instead of storing them indefinitely, ask a pharmacist or healthcare professional about the appropriate way to dispose of unused medication in your area.
