Chapter 2: A thirty-year-old man began regularly visiting my elderly neighbor. But one day, when I stepped inside her home, I discovered something terrifying.

“Just like Mrs. Wilson's accounts?”

My mother nodded.

“Your father believed someone was using elderly investors' identities to take control of valuable property.”

“Did he go to the police?”

“He was preparing to.”

Her voice broke.

“Then he died.”

I stared at her.

“Mom, are you saying someone killed Dad?”

She wiped her eyes.

“I don't know. I never had proof.”

Detective Harris returned.

His expression had changed.

“Mrs. Parker, the company you mentioned still exists.”

My mother looked up.

“Northbridge?”

“Yes. Under a different corporate structure.”

He placed his phone on the table.

“Northbridge Capital's current managing director is a man named Victor Price.”

My mother closed her eyes.

I looked at the photograph of Eleanor Price.

Then toward the detective.

“Price,” I repeated.

“Daniel Price?”

Detective Harris nodded.

“We're investigating whether they're related.”

My stomach twisted.

“And Alex?”

The detective's expression darkened.

“We've identified him as Alexander Price.”
