Chapter 2: A thirty-year-old man began regularly visiting my elderly neighbor. But one day, when I stepped inside her home, I discovered something terrifying.

I leaned closer.

It was a baby blanket.

A white blanket embroidered with tiny blue flowers.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written:

Margaret — June 1963.

I frowned.

Mrs. Wilson had never mentioned having children.

As far as I knew, she and George had married later in life and never had a family of their own.

I was about to put the picture away when another slip of paper fell from the envelope.

It was a note from the restoration studio.

Mrs. Wilson, we found a second photograph adhered to the back of the original. Both have been preserved separately as requested.

Beneath it lay the second photograph.

This one showed a newborn girl resting in a hospital bassinet.

A small identification card was visible beside her head.

The writing was too faint to read clearly.

But the photographer had included a magnified reproduction.

I stared at the name.
