Chapter 2: A thirty-year-old man began regularly visiting my elderly neighbor. But one day, when I stepped inside her home, I discovered something terrifying.

I nodded.

“And Gloria Bell?”

“Still unconfirmed.”

“What about Agnes Vale?”

The detective looked at her notes.

“Her death certificate was issued by a physician associated with a private care organization.”

I frowned.

“Which organization?”

“Silver Hearth.”

A chill ran through me.

The same organization appeared everywhere.

The young man at Mom's door.

The relocation offers.

Mrs. Wilson's suspicious paperwork.

And now the death certification of a woman who had supposedly died six weeks earlier.

“Do you think Agnes was murdered?” I whispered.

Detective Ortiz answered carefully.

“We don't have evidence of that. But we're verifying the circumstances of her reported death.”

She turned a document toward me.

Silver Hearth Home Support was registered as a nonprofit organization.

Its public mission was to help older adults remain independent and protect them from financial exploitation.

The irony was sickening.

A group supposedly protecting seniors was connected to multiple cases of suspected financial abuse.
