Chapter 2: A thirty-year-old man began regularly visiting my elderly neighbor. But one day, when I stepped inside her home, I discovered something terrifying.

She unlocked the bottom drawer and removed a sealed envelope.

My name was written across it.

Inside was a legal document dated twenty-six years earlier.

A trust agreement.

The beneficiary was listed as:

EMILY PRICE.

My birth name.

Beneath it was the estimated value of the trust.

Forty-eight million dollars.

I stared at the number until the page blurred.

Then I noticed the names of the trustees.

RICHARD PRICE.

ELEANOR PRICE.

And one final name.

MARGARET PARKER.

My mother had been controlling my inheritance for twenty-six years.

Before I could speak, my phone rang.

Detective Harris.

I answered.

“Emily, where are you?”

“At my mother's house.”

His voice became urgent.

“Get away from her.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

“We just finished interviewing Eleanor Price.”

I stared at my mother.

She had gone completely still.

Detective Harris continued.

“Eleanor told us something about Margaret.”

I could barely breathe.

“What?”

“She said Margaret wasn't the woman who rescued you from Richard Price.”
