Chapter 2: A thirty-year-old man began regularly visiting my elderly neighbor. But one day, when I stepped inside her home, I discovered something terrifying.

I stared at his name.

“That can't be right.”

Detective Harris said nothing.

“My father discovered the fraud. He was trying to stop it.”

“That's what your mother told us.”

I looked up.

“You don't believe her?”

“We're verifying the history.”

He turned another page.

There were bank statements.

Large transfers.

Payments from companies connected to Northbridge.

And several deposits into an account bearing my father's name.

My stomach twisted.

“What does this mean?”

Detective Harris looked uncomfortable.

“It suggests your father had financial dealings with the people he later accused of stealing from the trust.”

I shook my head.

“No. He wouldn't.”

“There may be another explanation.”

I wanted to believe that.

I needed to.

Then Detective Harris handed me one final document.

It was a letter written by Richard Price.

Addressed to my father.

Dated two weeks before his death.

The final paragraph made my vision blur.

"If Margaret refuses to cooperate, remind her that Emily still doesn't know where she came from."
