Someone who had always loved me.
Even before I knew why.
I was thirty years old when I discovered that protecting the people we love sometimes means noticing the smallest changes.
An unanswered telephone.
A locked door.
A frightened voice.
A familiar person suddenly disappearing from their ordinary routines.
Those things may seem insignificant.
But sometimes, they're the only clues that someone is in trouble.
And sometimes, listening carefully can change more than one life.
I looked toward Grandma's porch one final time.
Then whispered into the warm evening air:
“You spent thirty years looking after me, Grandma. I'm glad I finally got the chance to look after you.”
Across the garden, her porch light switched on.
A moment later, she appeared at the window.
She spotted me.
Smiled.
And waved.
I waved back.
Then she opened the window and called:
“Emma, sweetheart! Don't forget breakfast tomorrow!”
I laughed.
“I won't, Grandma!”
