Mom laughed.
“Margaret, you didn't have to do all this.”
Grandma smiled.
“I've missed too many of your birthdays already.”
Mom's expression softened.
Then she hugged her.
For several seconds, neither let go.
I stood nearby, trying not to cry.
When it was time for cake, Grandma asked Mom to make a wish.
Mom closed her eyes.
Then blew out the candles.
Everyone cheered.
I leaned forward.
“What did you wish for?”
Mom smiled mysteriously.
“Can't tell you.”
Grandma laughed.
“Some traditions never change.”
Later, after the guests had gone home, Mom asked Grandma to sit with her on the porch.
I was carrying dishes inside when I heard my mother's voice.
“Margaret?”
“Yes, sweetheart?”
Mom hesitated.
Then said softly:
“I think I'm ready to call you Mom.”
I stopped moving.
Grandma made a small sound.
Almost a gasp.
“What?”
Mom took her hand.
“I love the parents who raised me. I'll always love them. Nothing can change that.”
