At my younger sister's wedding, my mother mocked my dress uniform in front of 200 guests and called me a "lowly soldier

That is how much thought went into it. I chose stationery to be credible to my own sister.

And I pulled into Halvergate at twenty past four with four sentences and a sealed folder on the passenger seat, and I sat there for about six minutes, and then I picked it up and carried it in.

I could have left it in the glovebox and gone and found her first.

That is the whole thing. Six minutes in a car park, and I took it in with me.

What I actually did.

I walked in and my mother called me a lowly soldier and I put it on the cake table in front of two hundred people.

Eleven seconds. That is all the distance there is between those two things.

I did not change my mind in the car park. I changed it somewhere between the door and the cake, while a woman I have not been close to since 2016 made a joke about me and about forty people laughed.
