At my son’s wedding, I found my seat outside beside the trash cans. The bride smirked and said, “Guess you don’t count.”-0198t

“And?”

“She said she was tired of you acting like you mattered more than her  family.”

I stared at my reflection in the dark windshield.

For years, I had wondered what Vanessa truly believed about me.

Now I knew.

Caroline lowered her voice.

“Then Daniel asked about the lake house.”

I pressed my fingertips against my forehead.

“Oh, Caroline.”

“Everyone heard. Vanessa started crying. Her father asked what lake house, and Daniel explained that it belonged to your parents and that you were planning to give it to him. Vanessa’s mother said, ‘Well, surely this can still be discussed tomorrow.’”

My stomach tightened.

“Of course she did.”

“Daniel told them the discussion was over.”

I opened my eyes.

“He left the reception,” Caroline said.

“What do you mean he left?”

“He walked out. Vanessa followed him. Then her parents followed her. Half the guests were standing around holding champagne while everything fell apart.”
