At 64, I Married a Man Half My Age. Six Months Later, I Discovered He Was Secretly Adding Something to My Drink Every Night—and Making Sure I Drank Every Last Drop.

“If I hadn’t discovered that bottle, would you ever have told me?” I asked him.

After a long silence, he answered, “I don’t know.”

That was all I needed to hear.

Weeks later, I returned to the mansion with Helen to collect my belongings. Daniel told me Dr. Cole had been removed from the program pending investigation and that the clinical trial had been suspended.

I asked who had sent the photograph.

“The third woman,” he replied. “Her name is Laura Mitchell. She’s alive.”

Laura had survived the earlier trial but continued suffering health problems. After learning the research might have resumed, she investigated and arranged for the photograph to reach Dr. Reeves.

She had warned me because nobody had listened when she first raised concerns.

Daniel begged me to reconsider our marriage.

“I really did fall in love with you,” he said.

“I believe that,” I replied. “But you forgot I have the right to choose for myself.”
