Sometimes I begged him through tears.
“Michael, please stop. I don’t want to do this anymore.”
He would begin crying too.
“Sarah, please. Just say it one more time.”
I never understood why he was so insistent.
Finally, I decided to discover the truth.
Dr. Emily Wilson was a woman in her early fifties. She carefully examined my abdomen before asking:
“Have you ever undergone fertility testing?”
“No. My husband says my body is the problem.”
“Which doctor confirmed that?”
I fell silent.
She looked at me carefully.
“Sarah, has your husband ever pressured you into doing something you didn’t want to do?”
“Yes. Every night. For eighteen years.”
Her expression changed.
“What does he make you do?”
When I explained our strange nightly ritual, the doctor turned pale.
She stood up, closed the door, and asked:
“Does your husband know you’re here?”
“No.”
She moved her chair closer.
