He had come to my father’s house that evening because he had recently received news that someone had contacted him about Daniel.
He was afraid the opportunity to learn what happened might disappear.
But there was another reason he had asked me to visit his home.
He had found a photograph.
He took it from his wallet and placed it beside the letter.
It showed my mother standing outside a small house, holding a baby wrapped in a white blanket. Beside her stood a young man with dark hair and a familiar smile.
The date written on the back was several months before I was born.
I looked at Grandpa.
“Who is the baby?”
He hesitated.
Then he said, “That’s you.”
I studied the photograph more closely.
“But who’s the man?”
Grandpa’s eyes filled with tears.
“Emily, I believe that man may have been the person your mother was trying to find before she died.”
Dad stood abruptly.
“That’s impossible.”
“Why?” I demanded.
“Because I saw the letters. I investigated. There was nothing.”
“Then why are you so afraid of this photograph?”
He looked at me, and I saw something I had never seen in his face before.
Uncertainty.
Grandpa reached for my hand, then stopped, giving me space to decide whether I wanted the contact.
“I asked you to come to my house because I wanted to show you the rest of the documents,” he explained. “I didn’t want to do it here, where every conversation becomes an argument. I should never have asked you to keep it secret from your father. That was wrong.”
His honesty surprised me.
For the first time that night, I understood that his request hadn’t been about what I had feared. He had wanted a quiet place to share a painful family history, but his secrecy had made an already confusing situation frightening.
I took a deep breath.
“I’m willing to see the documents,” I said. “But not tonight, and not in secret. If there’s something about Mom that I need to know, we’ll discuss it together.”
Grandpa nodded.
“That’s fair.”
My father looked exhausted.
“I should have told you years ago,” he admitted. “I thought silence would protect you. Instead, I made you feel as if you couldn’t trust either of us.”
