“Stay with me,” María said softly.
Emily gave the smallest nod.
Upstairs, Daniel repeated the command for Thomas to back away.
Thomas answered with the same controlled tone he had used at the front door.
“You’re making a mistake.”
Daniel did not argue.
Thomas tried again.
“My daughter is upset. She gets confused when she wakes up.”
From Daniel’s radio came Claire Johnson’s voice.
“Unit 12, the emergency line is still connected.”
Thomas’s eyes flicked toward the phone lying facedown in the hallway.
It was a tiny movement.
Daniel saw it.
Claire heard the sudden silence on her end too.
For nearly ten years, she had listened to people lie, panic, bargain, whisper, pray, threaten, and sometimes say nothing at all.
She knew silence could carry information.
At 9:19 p.m., she added another notation to the call record: officers on scene, adult male obstructing access to child’s indicated room, original caller still present.
