“Simon wanted you to decide whether to keep looking,” Nora explained calmly.
“Why would he do that?” I asked angrily.
“Because once you know the truth, you can’t unknow it,” Nora warned gently.
“Stop talking like you are speaking lines in a movie,” I snapped back.
She flinched slightly at my tone. “You are right, I am sorry.”
“Who are you really?” I asked, trying to calm my racing heart.
“I grew up in foster care, and Simon and I knew each other from the children’s home,” Nora revealed softly.
That answer stopped me completely in my tracks. Simon almost never talked about those early childhood years.
“You knew him when he was a kid?” I asked softly.
“Yes,” Nora answered gently.
“And what about now?” I inquired further.
“I work with social services, helping families and children moving through the system,” Nora explained clearly.
“Was that why you were visiting him at the hospital?” I asked, pieces starting to fall together.
