23 Strange Signs Your Kidneys Might Be in Trouble

# 23 Strange Signs Your Kidneys Might Be in Trouble

Your kidneys quietly perform several essential jobs every day. They filter waste from the blood, help regulate fluid and electrolyte balance, support blood pressure control, and produce hormones involved in red blood cell production and bone health.

The difficult part is that kidney disease can develop with **few or no obvious symptoms in the early stages**. Many warning signs only appear once kidney function has declined significantly.

The symptoms below do **not automatically mean you have kidney disease**. Many can have completely different causes. What matters most is whether they are persistent, worsening, or occurring together.

## 1. Persistent Fatigue

Feeling tired after a difficult day is normal. But ongoing exhaustion, weakness, or unusually low energy can sometimes occur when the kidneys are not working properly.

Kidney disease can contribute to anemia and the buildup of waste products in the blood, both of which may affect energy levels.

Some people with more advanced kidney problems describe:

* brain fog
* difficulty focusing
* reduced alertness
* problems remembering things

These symptoms are nonspecific and can also be caused by stress, poor sleep, medications, or many other conditions.

## 3. Swollen Ankles and Feet

The kidneys help control sodium and fluid levels.

When kidney function declines, excess fluid may collect in the tissues, causing swelling in the:

* feet
* ankles
* lower legs
* hands
* sometimes the face

Swelling can also be caused by heart, liver, vein, or circulation problems.

## 4. Puffy Eyes in the Morning

Persistent puffiness around the eyes can sometimes occur when protein leaks into the urine.

Occasional morning puffiness may simply result from sleep, allergies, or salt intake, but repeated swelling deserves attention.
