“What else?”
Daniel breathed unevenly. Somewhere in the background, I heard traffic.
“Your father wrote a sealed letter. Instructions to be opened only if Ryan Bennett attempted to challenge your control of the company.”
I closed my eyes.
My father had died before I met Ryan.
“How could he write about Ryan?”
“He didn’t use Ryan’s name.”
“Then whose name did he use?”
Silence.
“Daniel?”
His voice dropped even lower.
“He used Evelyn Bennett’s.”
Ryan’s mother.
The woman in the care facility.
The woman I had met only twice, both times silent in a wheelchair while Ryan hovered over her like a dutiful son for the benefit of nurses and visitors.
I looked at Michael. He looked as confused as I felt.
“Daniel,” I whispered, “what does Evelyn have to do with my father?”
“I should have told you sooner,” he said. “Your father made me promise to wait until there was a legal necessity.”
“What legal necessity?”
“A challenge. A threat. Any attempt to force you out of control.”
My pulse thudded in my ears.
“Daniel, tell me what’s in the letter.”
“I don’t have it anymore.”
“What do you mean?”
“The sealed original is missing from my office.”
Michael reached for the wall, steadying himself with one hand.
Daniel’s voice broke slightly. “And Emma, there’s something else. Your father wasn’t only protecting you from losing the company.”
The static thickened.
“Daniel?”
“He was protecting you from finding out why Ryan married you.”
Then the line went dead.
I stared at the phone.
Michael took it gently from my hand. “Emma?”
But I couldn’t answer.
Because every memory had started rearranging itself.
The charity gala where I met Ryan.
His effortless smile.
The way he seemed to know exactly which stories about my father would soften me.
The proposal that came too quickly but felt like fate because I wanted so badly to be chosen.
The company he said he built alone.
The mother he said had no one but him.
My father’s trust.
Evelyn Bennett’s name.
And Daniel’s final words, still echoing through the sterile hospital room:
He was protecting you from finding out why Ryan married you.
Michael stepped toward the door. “I’m calling Detective Mills back.”
But before he reached it, the door opened.
A nurse stood there, pale and breathless, holding a sealed envelope in both hands.
“Dr. Carter,” she said, “this was left at the emergency department desk ten minutes ago. It’s addressed to your sister.”
Michael took one look at the envelope and froze.
My name was written across the front in careful black ink.
Emma Carter-Bennett.
Below it, in a handwriting I had not seen since the last birthday card he ever gave me, were four impossible words.
In my father’s hand.
Open when Ryan lies.
