For one second, the composed mask slipped.
Not fear.
Recognition.
He folded the paper neatly and placed it inside his jacket.
“Tell him I received it.”
“That isn’t all.”
The young man set a small brass key on the nearest table.
It landed with a soft metallic click.
Anthony stared at it.
Maria’s fingers tightened around mine.
The change was so slight that no one else might have noticed. But I did.
She knew the key.
The young man stepped back.
“He said the room has been opened.”
Anthony’s jaw hardened.
“Leave.”
The six men moved toward the entrance with the same careful discipline they had shown upon arriving. No one attempted to stop them.
Before walking out, the young man looked directly at Maria.
For the briefest moment, his expression softened.
Then he was gone.
The doors closed behind them.
Sound did not return immediately. The restaurant remained suspended in a strange, breathless pause.
Anthony turned to one of the men near the bar.
“Make sure they leave the neighborhood.”
The man nodded and slipped outside.
Then Anthony addressed the room.
“There is no danger. Please continue your evening.”
It was astonishing how quickly everyone obeyed.
Forks moved again. Voices returned in low, uncertain murmurs. A waiter began cleaning the broken glass.
The room was not normal, but it pretended to be.
Anthony came back to our table.
“Mama, we’re leaving.”
Maria straightened her pearl necklace.
“I haven’t eaten.”
“I’ll have something prepared at home.”
“I wanted Bellarosa’s eggplant.”
“Mama.”
She gave him a look that could have stopped a train.
“Do not use that tone with me.”
Anthony glanced toward the brass key still resting on the nearby table.
His control seemed to require effort now.
Maria saw it too.
“Very well,” she said quietly. “We’ll go.”
She tried to rise, but her legs wavered.
I stood instinctively and took her arm.
Anthony reached her at the same time.
For one strange second, our hands met against the navy fabric of her sleeve.
His hand was warm, steady, and unexpectedly careful.
“I’ve got her,” he said.
Maria frowned.
