HE MOCKED YOU AT YOUR DAUGHTER’S WEDDING… THEN YOU ASKED ONE QUESTION THAT FROZE 300 GUESTS COLD

You exhale.
“Because I didn’t want you to rely on it,” you admit. “I wanted you to know you could stand without my shadow.”
You touch her cheek. “But if someone comes for you… I’ll be the wall.”

Mateo steps onto the terrace then, face pale, tie loosened.
He looks older than he did an hour ago.
“Can we talk?” he asks you, voice careful.

You nod.
Valeria squeezes your hand and slips back inside, giving you space.

Mateo leans on the railing, staring out at the lights like he’s trying to find a version of his father that makes sense.
“I didn’t know,” he says. “About… any of it.”

You keep your tone gentle.
“Most sons don’t,” you say. “Because fathers build kingdoms and hide the cracks.”

Mateo’s jaw tightens.
“Is he in trouble?”

You consider your answer.
You could crush Don Federico.
You could turn his wedding into the first domino of his downfall.
You could, finally, make a powerful man feel powerless.

But you remember your mantra: dignity doesn’t negotiate.
And vengeance is a bargain you pay for with your own peace.

“He’s in accountability,” you say. “Which is different than ruin.”
You glance at Mateo. “What happens next depends on what he chooses when nobody is clapping or watching.”

Mateo’s eyes glisten.
“And what do you choose?” he asks.

You look through the glass doors at your daughter laughing with her friends, her shoulders lighter than they’ve ever been.
You look at the chandelier-lit room that tried to turn you into a footnote, and failed.
And you know exactly what you choose.

“I choose,” you say quietly, “to make sure the world treats my daughter fairly.”
You meet Mateo’s gaze. “Including your family.”

Mateo nods slowly, swallowing hard.
“I’ll stand with her,” he says.
Then, after a beat, “And… with you.”
