PART 2 Joanna stared at the doctor, her exhaustion giving way to confusion.

The nurses remained silent, unsure whether to comfort the new mother or the man whose hands still trembled.
Dr. Wright carefully looked from the faded photograph to the newborn once more.
“I owe you an explanation,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
Thirty-one years earlier, he had been a young resident working his first overnight shift.
During a terrible winter storm, a baby had been brought into the hospital with no identifying information.
The child’s mother had disappeared before anyone could learn her name.
The only thing left behind was a single photograph of the infant.
Despite every effort, no relatives were ever found.
“I kept this picture because I never stopped wondering what happened to that family,” Dr. Wright said.
“I told myself that one day I’d find an answer.”
Joanna frowned.
“But what does that have to do with my son?”
The doctor took a slow breath.
“The birthmark.”
He gently pointed toward the baby’s left shoulder.
Joanna looked down.
Just beneath the blanket rested a small crescent-shaped birthmark she had noticed only moments before.
Dr. Wright unfolded the old photograph.
The infant in the picture bore the exact same unusual mark in the exact same place.
“It can’t be a coincidence,” one nurse whispered.
Dr. Wright nodded slowly.
“I’ve never seen another one like it.”
Joanna’s heart pounded.
“My parents adopted me when I was an infant,” she admitted.
“They always said they knew very little about my biological family.”
The room fell silent again.
For the first time, Dr. Wright looked directly into Joanna’s eyes instead of at the baby.
“Your adoption records…”
She swallowed hard.
“They were sealed.”
He closed the photograph and slipped it back into his pocket.
“Then this may be the first real clue either of us has ever had.”
Just then, another nurse hurried into the room carrying an old patient file she had retrieved from the hospital archives.
She handed it to Dr. Wright.
A single name was written across the front.
The moment Joanna read it, tears filled her eyes.
It was the same mysterious surname engraved on the silver locket she had worn since childhood.
